A Mobile Service Centre van is touring the Great Southern region, offering communities access to Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services.

The service van, Desert Rose, will visit towns including Jerramungup, Gnowangerup, Katanning, Kojonup and Tambellup in the next month to help locals with services and payments.

A social worker will accompany service staff to offer short-term counselling and referrals.

Department of Human Services spokesman Hank Jongen said Mobile Service Van staff provided face-to-face service.

“This includes new claims for payments, updating information in our records, Medicare registrations, certifying documents, and accessing online services,” he said.

“Our staff can also help veterans and their families with Department of Veterans’ Affairs services and our Farm Household Case Officers provide ongoing support to those receiving the Farm Household Allowance. This is to help them meet their goals and access other services such as the Rural Financial Counselling Service.”

In 2017-18, two Mobile Service Centres visited 375 towns and helped more than 10,000 people.

“We try to prioritise visiting communities that are more than 50km from a service centre,” Mr Jonge said. “There are a range of factors determining which communities the Mobile Service Centres may visit ... the community’s access to our services, community requests and events such as drought declarations.”
