Denmark surfing sensation Isi Campbell claims pair of 2024 WA stand-up paddleboard championships in Geraldton

Denmark world surfing star Isi Campbell briefly traded her trusty shortboard for a long one and was crowned dual champion at the 2024 WA Stand-Up Paddleboard Championships in Geraldton on Sunday. Having recently come home following overseas surfing tournaments in Indonesia and South America, Campbell claimed the open women’s and under-18 junior division titles in her maiden SUP competition. Campbell scored 29.30 — a score that would also have won the open men’s division — in the open women’s division, beating Scarborough’s Tashka Goswell (17.77). She then bettered that result in the under-18 junior division with a score of 30.10. Campbell’s showing netted her the Maverick award which honours the life of Mid West local Patrice Richardson and her enduring legacy. Competing alongside her father Peter, who finished second in the men’s over-50 division, Campbell said surfing on stand-up paddleboards had helped her with rehabilitation from injury. “It’s been really, really fun and the waves have been pumping,” she said. “I’ve never entered a SUP event before, but have been riding a SUP as part of my rehabilitation from shoulder surgery. “I’ve never competed in an event alongside my dad, which made this weekend even more memorable.” Greenwood’s Peter Tomsett won the open men’s title with 12.17 ahead of Joel De Guzman (11.2) and Peter Blackall (6.17). Spearwood’s Crawford Olney clinched the open men’s 10ft title with a score of 11.93, with Richard Wain (9.60) in second. Despite finishing second to Campbell in the open women’s competition, Goswell celebrated a win in the open women’s 10ft division. Chris Twomey from Karrinyup achieved the highest score of the day in the men’s over-40 division with 30.30, as well as winning the over-50 event. Bicton’s Jamie Ralston (Bicton) won the men’s over-50 10ft title with a score of 11.50 and the men’s over-60 event, scoring 27.2.
