Star Albany three-year-old Red Can Man set to return on Saturday in listed H.G. Bolton sprint for Steve Wolfe

One of the State’s most promising three-year-olds Red Can Man will make his highly anticipated return to the races when he tackles Saturday’s listed $100,000 H.G. Bolton Sprint first-up at Belmont Park. The Steve Wolfe-trained Red Can Man has drawn ideally in barrier one for his return to racing after an impressive five-length win untouched in a 950m trial at Lark Hill last Monday. Jockey Peter Knuckey will pick up the plum ride on the Gingerbread man gelding with Shaun McGruddy, who rode him to three consecutive victories last preparation, serving an 11-day suspension for careless riding. Knuckey piloted the gelding to victory in the listed Fairetha Stakes earlier this season before running third to War Saint in the Group 2 WA Guineas, with the runner-up Kay Cee going on to win the $1 million Kingston Town Classic. Red Can Man won three consecutive ratings races at Ascot in March and April for Wolfe and McGruddy. He will tackle a field of 12 rivals in Saturday’s feature race and will carry 55kg and opened the $2.35 favourite with TABtouch. Wolfe said Cup Night looms as the main danger for his star youngster. “There is no rating races suitable for him at the moment so we decided to send him to the H.G. to keep him tuned and ticking along,” Wolfe said. “He is 80 per cent fit and will have one or two runs this preparation to get him ready for the spring. “We just want to keep him ticking along and give him some exercise, we didn’t want him in the paddock through winter. “He is a serious horse. “He is nowhere near his top but we are just getting him ready to be 100 per cent for later in the year.” Earlier this year Wolfe said Red Can Man could be headed for either of the Group 1 features the Railway or Winterbottom Stakes.
