Katanning residents are among WA’s biggest buyers of health and beauty products online, according to an internet shopping report by Australia Post.

In terms of numbers, Katanning residents are the third-biggest buyers of health and beauty products online in the State and the sixth biggest in the nation, ordering on average 3.4 parcels a household per year.

Katanning Regional Business Association president Emma McKinley said she was not surprised by the statistics as she had noticed an increasing trend towards online shopping over the past few years.

As KRBA president and owner of the McKinley clothing shop in Katanning, Ms McKinley recognised that the majority of shoppers chose to buy goods online because of better prices.

“I think a lot of our businesses have got good selections — you generally can get anything in town if you need to,” she said.

“Sure it might be a little bit more pricey — but at the end of the day people have to stop and think that our small local businesses are the ones that put back into our community.” Ms McKinley said competing with online shops had been challenging as most online business avoided high labour costs and big rent and utility bills.

“We try to employ staff to keep employment in town. At the end of the day, we’re what keep the town going,” she said. “We would like to see people come and stay in Katanning and to do that we must first support local business”
