Budding Great Southern tennis stars gather for annual Tambellup junior tennis tournament

About 50 budding Great Southern tennis stars hit the courts in Tambellup for the annual Tambellup junior tennis tournament on Sunday.

The tournament drew brilliant young talent from all corners of the Great Southern including Tenterden, Cranbrook, Broomehill, Kojonup, Gnowangerup, Katanning and Woodanilling to take part in the event.

Skye Lockyer and Isla Patterson won the under-12s girls tournament after defeating Adahna Wells and Hanna Bignell, while Theo Bignell and Rex Hewson defeated James Groves and Darcy Kerin to lift the under-12s boys trophy.

Claire Kowald and Lorelei Severin beat Lily Penny and Isabelle Dennis to win the under-10s girls competition.

The under-10s boys team of Damien Chambers and Liam Clarke were too strong for Taj Wells and Gus Thorn while Zaeli Green claimed the under-8s competition.

Maxwell Lewis won the under-8s boys competition and James Cuthill, Charlie Lehmann and Archie Lewis each won sportsmanship awards.

Tournament organiser Kylie Lockyer said it was rewarding to see the event so well supported and made possible by parents and sponsors.

“It’s a great opportunity for our kids to get some real match experience in a familiar environment and so good to see parents spending time with their kids supporting them, and helping umpire,” Lockyer said.

“Everyone has fun on days like this and we want to thank 124 Tambellup Deli and McIntosh and Son who stepped up and sponsored our event.

“Kids sport is so important and without sponsors, it is tricky to make days like this possible and it is just great to have them involved in our community this way.”
