Car ploughs into Baldivis home, as a driver and child are seriously hurt in separate Edgewater crash

A nine-year-old girl was lucky to escape unharmed after a car smashed into her parents’ Baldivis home in the early hours of Sunday morning, demolishing the kitchen and blocking the door to her bedroom. The white Toyota Camry sedan ploughed through a fence and a wall into the kitchen of the Poorinda Lane house just after 1.40am. “It went through the fence, a wall, a cabinet, a full-size slate pool table, the kitchen island, and then pushed the rest of the kitchen with the oven and stuff against the wall, straight into the hallway,” owner Michael said. “And it stopped just in front of (my daughter’s) room. You can see cracks in the wall.” The 27-year-old male driver was taken to Rockingham Hospital with minor injuries. Neighbours who rushed outside after they were woken by the crash said they saw the driver walk away from the scene with the help of a relative who lived nearby. “They left before the emergency services got here,” resident Samson Carroll said. Michael — who did not want his last name published — said he heard the car’s engine revving as it came down Daisy Lane, a laneway that ends opposite the rear of his house on Cappuccino Drive, before he heard a loud crash. “So I ran out, knowing it was close, but I had no idea it was in our kitchen,” he said. “And when I saw the car, I yelled out a few expletives and then ran back for the phone to start calling the emergency services. “And then figure out how to get (my daughter) out of her room, because her room was just blocked off with everything.” It was with a huge sense of relief that Michael heard his daughter call out, because he was unable to see how badly her room was damaged. “I went around the side, and she opened the window, and I busted the flywire to get her out,” he said. “She was surprisingly not panicky. She just took it like a champ. “Apparently, she didn’t even wake up when the car hit — she only woke up when the horn went off.” Michael had a lucky escape of his own. “I went to bed around 1.30am.” he said. “So I was in the kitchen ten minutes earlier, where the car landed. “I was getting ready for bed, getting a drink of water, putting a few things away — that was a waste of time,” he added, as he ruefully surveyed the wreckage, pointing out where the stove, island bench and walk-in pantry used to be. “The silver thing on its side is a fridge — fully stocked yesterday morning,” he said. The only other person in the house at the time was Michael’s wife. The couple built the house 11 years ago. Michael said the house was insured, and he was grateful everyone was safe. “From there, you just have to find the next job, put one foot in front of the other, I guess,” he said. Police said the crash had caused significant structural damage to the home. They are appealing for anyone with security cameras in the area, or dash-cam video, to contact Crime Stoppers. Meanwhile, Major Crash Detectives are investigating a serious crash in Edgewater that has left a driver fighting for life. He was stationary, waiting to exit George Grey Place on to Joondalup Drive when he was hit from behind at about 4.45pm on Saturday. Police say the 31-year-old driver of the white Corolla sedan suffered critical injuries. The 47-year-old male driver of the other vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was not hurt but an eight-year-old child in the ute was taken to hospital with serious injures.
