It was only three years ago that Matt Wilson started Wilson Brewing Co — and after taking out 10 awards at the Perth Royal Beer Awards last week, they are showing no signs of slowing down.

Five of their brews took out nine bronze medals in various categories in the Statewide competition, while the Stiff Mast Bitter claimed a silver medal in the Dark Ale Draught category.

Now employing 15 people, supplying more than 270 outlets across the State and starting to expand interstate, the brewery is becoming an Albany icon.

Matt Wilson said the team was over the moon to take away so many awards across their range of beers.

“It really shows the effort that the whole team has put in, right from brewing, to packaging, to sales to distribution,” he said.

“Getting this feedback is fantastic, so we know they are great beers and we can tweak them that little bit extra to make them perfect.”

He said he was surprised to see which of their brews won awards.

“The Rough Seas is our biggest seller, but didn’t take an award this year because it doesn’t really fit into any category,” he said.

“I was not expecting the Stiff Mast — I wasn’t surprised, but I was really happy that it got some recognition for the beer that it is.

“The Draught, too, we started that for the 40th commemoration of the whaling station and then we decided to roll it out with the core range because it had such good feedback.”

With aspects of Albany featuring on their cans and designs, the family-run business is proud of their part of the world and grateful for the local support they have had along their journey.

“Everywhere we go we try to promote Albany. We are Albany proud,” Mr Wilson said.
