There was plenty of laughter and joyful shrieks at Middleton Beach on Sunday as dozens of Albany locals willingly plunged into the chilly ocean for a special cause.
About 34 emergency services and community members took part in this year’s Polar Plunge, leaping from the Middleton Beach jetty to raise money for Special Olympics Australia, while dozens of supporters lined the jetty and the rocks to cheer them on.
The annual fundraiser saw participants arriving in brightly coloured costumes, different animal onesies and uniforms for the jump.
The morning begun with plenty of chatter as participants caught up, preparing themselves for the icy water.
Before anyone jumped in, event organiser Lizzy Alderson and Special Olympics athlete Sara Cann addressed the crowd, speaking about the importance of the event and the difference it makes for athletes with different kinds of disabilities.
Not long after, pedestrians could hear a countdown echoing from the jetty as participants launched themselves into the water.
While the icy dip only lasts a few seconds, the fundraiser continues well beyond the weekend.
On Wednesday morning, Polar Plunge in Albany had raised $5000 and the event nationally more than $532,000 for the Special Olympics. Donations will still be accepted on the website until the end of the month.
