The Active Citizenship Award for the Albany community group or event of the year was awarded to STRYKA Fight Team on Friday.

The team is led by Guy Mead and supported by several volunteers.

It uses an innovative approach to martial arts to engage at-risk youth in the Albany community.

The free program instils a sense of community in its participants by providing services for seniors and people living with disability.

Its priority is to assist in the growth of good people by providing a safe, supervised environment for young people to receive mentoring and training in their chosen sport.

Albany Pride and Albany Mountain Bike Club were also recognised as nominees for the award during the City of Albany’s formal Australia Day proceedings.
