Polonia and Caledonians edged closer to Albany-Bayswater after the ladder-leaders lost their first game of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s premier league on Saturday night.

Coming up against the Albany Rovers in their round 9 fixture, Polonia proved too strong, winning their third game of the season.

It was the second time they had beaten Rovers this season, and Polonia were forced to come from behind after Rovers netted two goals in the opening half.

Polonia hit back in the second 45 minutes as they scored three goals on their way to a 4-2 triumph.

Youngster Jared Wiegele was terrific for the winners and scored one of his side’s four goals, with Nathan Small, Cameron Spence and Tom Carrington also finding the back of the net.

In the other match played on Saturday night, Albany-Bayswater suffered their first blemish of the season.

Goals from Fraser Grant and Ben Grey helped Caledonians take a 2-0 lead into half-time.

Fabio Ambrosini pulled a goal back for Albany-Bayswater in the second half but red cards to Alessandro Casilli, Daniele Maggi and keeper Tyler Nastasi didn’t help their cause as Caledonians finished 2-1 winners.

The result leaves Albany-Bayswater five points clear of Caledonians, who have a game in hand.

The men’s reserves league results last Saturday were decisive, with Polonia Eagles comfortable 5-0 winners over Rovers, while Kieran Loveridge netted four goals in Caledonians’ 5-2 victory against Albany-Bayswater.

Old Boyz, Rovers Social, Polonia and Mt Barker were winners in round 9 of the men’s social/vets league last Tuesday.

School country week left a number of women’s A and B matches either rescheduled, unplayed or forfeited.

Phoenix won on forfeit over Caledonians in their league A encounter, while in league B, Phoenix beat Port Albany 5-2 and Albany-Bayswater drew 2-2 with Caledonians.

Polonia Red won by forfeit over Polonia White and other round 9 games are yet to be played.
