If you want a dose of Christmas joy to treat a case of 2020 blues, clear your schedule and head to 50 Parker Street in Lockyer.

From a strong field of candidates throughout our city, there was only ever one winner of the 2020 Albany Christmas Lights Competition.

Entries were judged on originality, effort and appearance, with the property scoring the highest mark in each category for a total of 25 points out of 30.

It was a tick after 9.30pm on Monday when the Advertiser reached the Fuentebellas’ home on Parker Street, the last house on the judging list for that particular night.

Three cars were parked on the verge and there was a huddle of people out the front, including Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and an elf.

Santa — or Ernesto Fuentebella, depending on your age — was the gracious host, taking photos and accepting compliments from visitors wowed by his Christmas lights.

But as he will tell you, their lights are a family effort.

The Fuentebellas were runners-up in last year’s competition, pipped at the post despite judges noting that “no other entry imparted such a strong and heartwarming sense of Christmas spirit”.

This year, the spirit was still there, but they took their audio-visual display to a whole new level.

What Mr Fuentebella described as “a little walk-through at the back garden” turned out to be startlingly extensive.

Reindeer Highway, North Pole Road, Bethlehem Street — you have to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

The 2020 Albany Christmas Lights Competition was presented in partnership with the City of Albany.
