Two skippers who won their respective Dymes Cup divisions last weekend proved it wasn’t a fluke when they won their King George Sound events in brilliant fashion on Saturday.

Division one skipper Harold Keay in Shagabull was a handful for Murray Deere in Wild One and Geoff Oliver in Excitabull.

In division two, Josh Hughes showed the alterations to Joker are paying off when he beat them all home.

Division one sailed a King George Sound flying start event, and Oliver gave a bit of cheek when he won the start and made Deere in Wild One and Keay in Shagabull chase him across the harbour into the sound.

They both caught and passed the smaller yacht as they completed several legs in the sound before returning to the harbour for the final legs, with Wild One leading Shagabull and Excitabull.

Deere hoisted a huge spinnaker to take Keay by surprise, who quickly followed suit and caught up — and with some brilliant sailing found himself in the lead and heading for the finish line.

Deere tried everything but Keay surged on to win and to record the fastest time in a splendid effort.

Excitabull had some sail problems towards the finish but, on corrected results, finished second, while Deere was third in Wild One.

Division two had a fleet of four, with Lloyd Pascoe elevated to that division with Arkessa — and he showed during the race the yacht has real potential.

Pascoe won the start and gave the other three a bit of a scare until they stamped their authority.

Stamping the hardest were Hughes in Joker and Stephen Brown in Mary Maitland, while Neil Worrell’s Zuri began slowly but picked up the pace later.

The southerly breeze at 14 knots gave the fleet fast times across the harbour and into the sound, with Joker leading.

On entering the harbour Joker was still in the lead, with Brown bearing down quickly.

Arkessa, with good use of a spinnaker, wasn’t far off, with Zuri bringing up the rear.

Somehow Brown had passed Hughes and looked like causing an upset until Joker regained the lead, heading for the finish line and a certain victory.

Brown, after a great battle with Hughes, was second and Arkessa was third in a promising debut for Pascoe.

Flying Fifteens held a match race between Simon Lucas in FForever Young and Aileen Lucas in Crazy.

They sailed over a harbour course, with FForever Young winning the start and opening up a handy lead.

Crazy responded to get within seconds of the leading boat.

It was touch and go for most of the race until FForever Young slipped away in the latter stages to take the race and to be fastest in a grand display, while Crazy was second in a fine effort.

Two Vipers made an unexpected appearance and held three impromptu short-course harbour races in which Murray Howson in Chinese Moccasin was too quick.
