Disabled Surfers Association Great Southern is issuing a call out for volunteers to help with the season’s surfing days at Middleton Beach.

President Kerry Oakley said the smaller number of volunteers meant less time in the water for participants.

“If we only have a handful of volunteers, it’s really not enough,” she said.

“If we get people in wheelchairs as well, we’ve got to take people off what we call a run so that if they fall off there’s enough people there to help them.”

Ms Oakley said getting in the water for the first time was an important experience for people with a wide variety of disabilities.

“It takes a lot of time and effort if we have an increase of participants and the more volunteers we get the better, and the more time people get to spend in the water,” she said.

Participants of all ages and abilities are welcomed to the sessions at Middleton Beach that return on January 20.

Interested people can contact Ms Oakley on 0499 401 001.
