Caledonians in mix for coveted cup title

Caledonians have eliminated Albany-Bayswater from the Great Southern Soccer Association Federation cup with a 2-0 victory in the quarterfinal last Saturday night at North Road soccer grounds.

The first round of cup fixtures was played across the week at all levels with Caledonians progressing to the semifinal after the win.

Brennan Childs and Kieran Loveridge scored for Caledonians.

Phoenix also moved into the semifinal round after thrashing Royals 15-2 on Saturday.

With a 6-0 lead at half-time, Phoenix pressed even harder to finish with nine goals in the second half.

Beau Timmer knocked in four goals for Phoenix while Shannon and Jarrad Korthius, Johan Dekker and Douglas Bosch all finished with two goals.

Nathan Griffiths and Roger Mejia Paez scored for Royals.

Polonia defeated Rovers 1-0 in the other quarterfinal after Cameron Spence scored in the first half.

The cup format ensures the team with the narrowest defeat progresses to the next round.

In the semifinal round, Polonia were drawn to play Rovers again while Phoenix and Caledonians face off in the other fixture.

In the women’s league A cup fixtures, Denmark recorded a 3-1 win against Polonia last Friday night. Ebony Thompson and Layla Wright scored for Denmark while Amanda Lau found the back of the net for Polonia.

Phoenix also notched an 8-0 victory, with Heather Bosch and Monique Eikelboom leading the attack with two goals each.

In the men’s masters cup fixtures, Polonia beat Cross Keys United 5-4, Caledonians defeated Old Boys 6-4, The Vets overcame Albany-Bayswater 5-2 and Denmark accounted for Rovers 5-3.

In the women’s league B cup, Albany-Bayswater was eliminated after going down to Denmark White 18-0.

Polonia White was also eliminated after an 8-1 defeat to Royals.

Denmark Black defeated Polonia Red 2-1, Mt Barker won 4-0 against Grammar White and Port Albany defeated Rovers 3-0.

This weekend, the GSSA returns to normal competition.
