Vietjet is the most emissions-efficient airline flying within South-East Asia, according to the 2025 Flight Emissions Review by Cirium.
Cirium’s independent Flight Emissions Review analyses operational data of the world’s 100 biggest airlines, and is a benchmark for the aviation industry.
This particular review compares emissions performance on flights operating entirely within South-East Asia, where shorter routes can make fuel efficiency more challenging.
But an insider says Vietjet’s performance demonstrates its ability to optimise operations across aircraft, network planning, and load management.
“A new-generation fleet underpins Vietjet’s emissions efficiency,” the Vietjet spokesperson says.
“The airline primarily operates Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, including the latest NEO variants, which deliver approximately 15-20 per cent fuel savings compared to previous-generation models.
“With one of the youngest fleets in the region, Vietjet continues to reduce fuel consumption and emissions per passenger — an increasingly important factor as Australia sharpens its focus on aviation sustainability and decarbonisation.”
Vietjet has also pushed ahead with advanced technologies, including:
+ Flight data analytics platforms such as SkyBreathe — innovative “big data software” which helps airlines save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.
+ Fuel optimisation initiatives like SFCO₂ — an app for pilots looking to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It can only be accessed by SFCO2 users. Based on analysis of flight data, it offers pilots personalised diagnostics adapted to flight operations.
“As travel between Australia and South-East Asia continues to grow, emissions efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for both passengers and the industry,” the spokesperson says.
“Vietjet’s performance highlights how airlines operating short and medium-haul routes commonly used by Australian travellers connecting through Asia can reduce their environmental impact while maintaining competitive fares.”
GETTING RESULTS
+ The results are based on Cirium’s EmeraldSky methodology.
+ It uses CO₂ per available seat kilometre (CO₂/ASK) as the primary metric.
+ That reflects how much fuel an airline burns relative to the passenger capacity it operates.
+ According to the report, Vietjet recorded 64.5g CO₂/ASK, placing first in the South-East Asia intra-regional ranking.
+ Singapore Airlines (66.7g) came next.

THE VIETJET STORY
+ Vietjet is Vietnam’s biggest private carrier, currently flying 135 aircraft, with nearly 600 more on order. They include both wide and narrow-body aircraft.
+ Vietjet is a full member of the International Air Transport Association and has an IATA operational safety audit certificate.
+ It flies direct from Perth to Ho Chi Minh City in about 6½ hours. In early June, there are economy flights to Vietnam from $262, with a return flight from $266.
