Punam Raut had faced 165 balls for 36 runs when the right-hander got the finest of outside edges from left-arm spin bowler Sophie Molineux.

The Australians appealed, led by an enthusiastic shout by wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy, who caught the pink ball behind the stumps.

As umpire Phillip Gillespie shook his head and declared the number three “not out”, Raut immediately set off towards the Indian dugout at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Beth Mooney, who was fielding at short leg, said she didn’t hear a noise but said Raut displayed “good sportsmanship” with the game being played without DRS.

Asked if she would do the same, the Perth Scorchers star said “nah, no chance.”

“You need to get a few going your way every now and then don’t you?,” Mooney told the Seven commentary team from on the field.

“No, I wouldn’t walk. I just asked the umpire if he heard it and he said ‘no’.”

The wicket was a breakthrough for the Australians, who had claimed just one scalp on the second day as India added 85 runs to their total. The visitors finished the second session on 3/231.

In a huge relief for Ellyse Perry, the star all-rounder claimed her first wicket of the Test in the final session, with Mooney catching Taniya Bhatia in the gully during the 93rd over.

The superb grab makes amends for an earlier error by Mooney, who didn’t hold on to an outside edge off Mithali Raj that cost Perry the Indian skipper’s wicket.
