VideoCarlton Football Club has recorded five staph infection cases among players in the last 12 to 18 months, with Cooper Lord being the most recent and serious case requiring four nights in hospital and surgery.

West Coast midfielder Elijah Hewett looks to be in line for his first game of the season as the Eagles look to make at least three changes to take on Sydney at Optus Stadium on Saturday.

Hewett, veteran defender Tom Cole and ruckman Bailey Williams were all not named in West Coast’s WAFL side to take on Perth on Good Friday.

Neither was last week’s travelling emergencies for the two-point win over Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval in key defender Sandy Brock and Malakai Champion.

Former Carlton forward Matt Owies was also not named in the team, having missed last weekend’s pre-season clash because of a hamstring injury.

Owies was deemed available in the club’s injury report on Tuesday.

The Eagles will be forced to make at least three changes to take on the Swans with midfielders Elliot Yeo (groin) and Deven Robertson (suspended) as well as forward Jacob Newton (foot) all unavailable.

Co-captain Liam Duggan is also no certainty to play after being listed as a test this week after he rolled his ankle late in the win over the Power.

Brock is a strong chance to come in to help Reuben Ginbey and Tylar Young take on Sydney’s three key forwards in Charlie Curnow, Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey.

Hewett is also a contender despite only returning from a quad injury only last week, playing limited minutes in a WAFL pre-season loss to Peel Thunder.

The 21-year-old is coming off a career-best season, playing 20 games after he missed all of 2024 with a serious foot injury.

Asked about Hewett on Wednesday morning, Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said they would not take any risks with the midfielder.

“Elijah has missed a fair bit of football now. Since (Christmas) he’s one played one or two practice matches, so we’ll just go away, train today and have a look at match committee to see if he’s (ready),” he said.

“We want to set him up for success and we don’t want to get him in and now be quite ready, so we’ll work through that.”

Champion was in good form for the Eagles’ WAFL side with back-to-back hauls of three goals, while Williams has also built a strong case after a groin injury hampered his pre-season.

Cole was dropped after the Eagles’ round one defeat to Gold Coast, collecting nine disposals and seven marks in the heavy loss.

Sydney are set to welcome back star Isaac Heeney from a hamstring injury as they look to bolster their side and continue their strong record at Optus Stadium, having won their past six games at the venue.
