Harley Reid has given away another 50-metre penalty leading directly to a goal — but the Eagles star may have the right to feel aggrieved on this occasion.
After Luke Jackson claimed an intercept mark on the wing midway through the second term of the western derby, the Dockers ruckman chipped a short kick inboard into Jordan Clark.
Clearly believing the ball had not travelled the required 15 metres for a mark to be paid, Reid immediately applied a tackle on Clark, only for the umpire to pay a 50-metre penalty.
The decision took Clark within range of goal and the All Australian half-back duly thumped a set shot from the paint of the 50-metre arc through for Fremantle’s fourth goal in a row.
Immediately after the infringement was paid, Jackson appeared to ruffle the hair of Reid. After fellow Docker Pat Voss was at the centre of a controversy involving Melbourne’s Harrison Petty last month, the AFL issued a directive to umpires saying the move should result in a free kick being paid against the offending player.
The sole Docker to remonstrate with the rising Eagles star after the goal was kicked with Voss, though their brief crossing of paths did not become physical.
Coming into West Coast’s clash with their cross-town rivals, Reid had given away 50-metre penalties which led directly to his side conceding a goal in each of their last two games.
In the Eagles’ 128-point thumping at the hands of Sydney, he slapped the ball away from Swans ruckman Brodie Grundy after a free kick had been paid, and he did the same to allow Geelong defender Sam De Koning to slot a rare major in their Gather Round clash last week.
