West Coast Eagles sign former college basketballer Jake Miles‑Wrency as Category B rookie

West Coast have added cross-code hopper Jake Miles‑Wrency to their rookie list as the former college basketballer looks to reignite AFL dream.
The 20-year-old has returned to football having spent the last five years pursuing basketball, representing Queensland at the state level before playing collegiate basketball in Illinois.
Prior to his hoops journey, Miles‑Wrency was a top state footballer, earning the Jason Akermanis Medal as best player at the Queensland U14 State Championships, where he played alongside Levi Ashcroft.
“It’s been unreal. Getting the call from ‘Mini’ (Andrew McQualter) last week, it was so special and meant so much. It’s been a dream ever since playing footy as a junior,” Miles-Wrency said.
“I’ve had some great experiences from playing basketball and look forward to using those skills to complement my footy.
“It’s a great combination of an exciting young team with some highly experienced guys and an amazing coaching staff that I can’t wait to learn from.
“I’m very grateful and excited to get over and get started.”
Despite being 199cm, Miles-Wrency is noted for his bursts of speed and athleticism being likened to new Eagles draftee Cooper Duff-Tytler and could help add depth to their fledgling ruck stocks as
List manager Matt Clarke said Miles-Wrency was a standout over the summer while trialling with the club.
“We are really excited to add someone of Jake’s athletic capabilities and his football skills during our trials really started to shine,” Clarke said.
“He is a very eager learner and driven character who is keen to get started.
“Jake has the athletic profile to play at either end of the ground, and the coaches are eager to see where he develops best.
“We are looking forward to Jake joining us very soon and integrating into our football program.”
