West Coast have backed up their upset win of the season last week against Claremont with a gritty seven-point victory over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.
The 14.12 (96) to 13.11 (89) win marks the Eagles first at Steel Blue Oval in 12 attempts, improving their win tally for the year to five.
Swan Districts were once again hampered by injury with four players out prior to the game, alongside three going down during the clash.
But in Nathan Blakely’s final game for the club, his side fought hard until the final siren.
The Swans now find themselves behind the eight ball at 3-7, sitting second-last on the ladder.
Tyrell Dewar had one of his best days in an Eagles jumper, booting a career high four goals, while Fin Macrae (25 disposals) and Harry Schoenberg (22 and six tackles) stepped up in the absence of fellow AFL-listed players to secure their side’s fifth win of the season.
Jack Williams hit the scoreboard with three first-half goals whilst also having an impact as a backup ruckman with 23 touches and eight marks. He finished with three majors for the day, which could have been more if not for missing easy chances and three behinds.
Swans skipper Jesse Turner (30 disposals and eight marks) found the footy effortlessly all day alongside Clint Hinchliffe with 32 touches.
Brad Lynch was dangerous up forward kicking four goals, along with a mark of the year contender during the third quarter.
The first half was fiery with multiple 50m penalties and downfield free kicks leading to goals for both sides.
Lucca Grego was the culprit for two himself, while Swans defender Sebastian Bright gave up a couple against Malakai Champion.
There were plenty of spot fires all over the ground and Champion being hit off the ball started one of the biggest. The small forward was also involved in another — after being caught, he was pushed in the back of the head on the ground, reversing the free kick and kicking a goal.
Both teams were able to transition the ball with ease, leading to a high-scoring first half as they went blow for blow. Neither team could fully assert dominance, but Swans’ four of the first five goals gave them a head start as Eagles tried to mow the margin down.
Swan’s chances were hampered early with defender Jake Pasini going down in the first quarter with an apparent hamstring injury, while Zachary Provest missed the second half after suffering a hamstring injury. To make matters worse, ruckman Lucas Impey limped off in the first handful of minutes in the second half, taking no further part in the game.
The third quarter was a stalemate as Swans were left with two on the bench and refused to take their chances up forward.
Swans were inaccurate in front of goal, including some relatively simple chances, putting through six behinds. While down the other end the Eagles took their first lead of the match early, and not letting up kicking three goals to have a 12-point lead at the final break.
Jackson McLachlan kicked the opener for Swan Districts in the last with Jovan Petric following up not lot after bringing the margin back to one point.
Clay Hall responded with a goal of his own halfway through the final term, with Tylah Williams then cutting off a switch inside forward 50, spinning around and snapping truly.
Lynch kicked his fourth, bringing the margin back to eight, but Leigh Kohlmann’s miss minutes later broke the hearts of Swan Districts as the Eagles ran time off the clock to seal the win.
