All they have to do is turn up!

It is a simple equation for sailors Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan, who have accumulated a big enough lead in the 470 class to take out gold and add to Australia’s already impressive medal tally.

When they take to the water tomorrow, the duo only have to finish after building an unassailable 20-point lead in racing today.

Belcher and Ryan held a 22-point lead going into race 10, which was whittled away to 20 points after they came in eighth.

But it’s a big enough buffer that they cannot be overtaken - as long as they don’t get disqualified in the final race tomorrow.

It’s a massive boost for the pair after they took silver in Rio in 2016.

It will also be a second gold for Belcher, who the even in London in 2012 with Malcolm Page, and secures his status as the nation’s most successful Olympic sailor.

It also represents the last time a gold medal may be won in the event, with the men’s 470 cut from the Paris 2024 Olympic program as part of the International Olympic Committee’s push for gender equality.
