Tomljanovic ousted at Indian Wells

Ajla Tomljanovic's bold run at the WTA Tour event in Indian Wells has been ended by former world No.1 Angelique Kerber.

The German 10th-seed proved too strong in their round of 16 clash, beating her Australian opponent 6-4 6-1 in 86 minutes.

Tomljanovic is still set to rise to No.43 in the world after continuing her career-best season at Indian Wells in California, where her scalps included former world No.1 Garbine Muguruza and French Open semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek.

Tomljanovic's exit came on a day when upsets continued in the women's draw.

Second-seeded Iga Swiatek lost to 24th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-3 - a day after top seed Karolina Pliskova was stunned by unheralded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.

Swiatek's defeat was then followed by American Jessica Pegula routing fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-1 6-1.

Third-seeded Barbora Krejikova was beaten by Spain's Paula Badosa 6-1 7-5 while teenage US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez, the 23rd seed, went out to Shelby Rogers 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-4).

The others to advance to the last eight were Victoria Azarenka, who downed Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 6-4, and the in-form Annett Kontaveit.

In the day's opening match, former French Open champion Ostapenko came from a break down in each set to secure to overcome Swiatek - to be 2-0 in her career meetings with the Polish grand slam winner - and advance to the quarter-finals.

The Latvian will face Rogers next after the American overwhelmed teenage ace Fernandez with 36 winners to 25.

Pegula needed just 68 minutes against an out-of-sorts Svitolina to book a spot in her seventh quarter-final of the season and fourth at WTA 1000 level.
