Bebou brace sets up Hoffenheim thrashing
Ihlas Bebou scored a brace as Hoffenheim beat Cologne for the seventh time in a row in the Bundesliga, this time a 5-0 clobbering.
Togo forward Bebou opened the scoring in the 31st minute off a defence-splitting pass from Andrej Kramaric, rounding goalkeeper Timo Horn and slotting into the empty net.
Cologne were beaten for good right after the restart when Bebou's backheeler off Kevin Akpoguma's low cross from the right in the 49th went in, which was followed by Christoph Baumgartner smashing home two minutes later.
Dennis Geiger and Stefan Posch, with his first goal for the club, completed the rout late in the game.
"We knew we had to win balls and create chances. You could see the quality of the team. It was also good to keep a clean sheet," Hoffenheim defender David Raum told streaming portal DAZN.
Cologne had lost just one of their first seven games, at champions Bayern Munich, but were poor on the night as their Hoffenheim nightmares continued with a seventh straight defeat and an overall winless run of 11 games against them over six years.
They are seventh while Hoffenheim rose to eighth one point back with a third victory of the season.
"We made far too many mistakes and weren't aggressive. That way you can't win here," Cologne's Rafael Czichos said.
The weekend round is highlighted by a Sunday duel between Bayer Leverkusen and champions Bayern Munich, who are tied on points at the top of the table.
But before that Borussia Dortmund and surprise team Freiburg, both one point back, can move ahead on Saturday with wins against Mainz and RB Leipzig respectively.
