Mikaela Shiffrin has won a 45th World Cup slalom race to move within one victory of the all-time record for victories in a single skiing discipline.

The great American Shiffrin topped the podium in Jasna, Slovakia, ahead of local star Petra Vlhova, who closed in on the overall lead again.

Shiffrin now has 69 career wins and the 45 in the slalom puts her just one behind Ingemar Stenmark's 46 career wins in the giant slalom.

With three slaloms left in the season, Shiffrin has the chance to pass the legendary Swede by the end of the campaign.

After her recent disappointment of failing to win a fifth straight world slalom title in Cortina, Shiffrin was at her best, rising from second after the first run and clocking 1 minute 44.28 seconds.

First-run leader Vlhova was 0.34 sec back in second which enabled her to close to within 107 points of Swiss leader Lara Gut-Behrami in the overall standings.

On the men's side, world champion Vincent Kriechmayr claimed his first World Cup downhill season win in his native Austria while second-placed Swiss Beat Feuz closed in on the discipline title.
