The Great Northern Junior Football League has announced a new youth girls’ competition, as preparations for the 2026 footy season begin to ramp up.

The under-19 competition will act as a stepping stone between youth girls’ and women’s footy, similar to colts in the male game.

The competition will start in March 2026 and run throughout terms 1 and 2. At this stage, each club is set to have a side. It is open to girls with all levels of experience and ability.

It is designed to keep older girls engaged in Aussie Rules while increasing their confidence, which is crucial given that research from Flinders University found that girls aged 15 and older have a 60 per cent drop-out rate in sport.

The under-19 competition joins the under-16 grade as female-only junior competitions. Last season, Mullewa under-16 girls made history after going undefeated to claim the flag in their debut season.
