Supercars star Shane van Gisbergen won Sandown Supersprint races with broken collarbone and broken ribs

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen has revealed he won all three Sandown Supersprint races with not only a broken collarbone, but three broken ribs.

X-rays taken to assess any further damage to his collarbone revealed the latest injury, making the Kiwi’s incredible feat even more remarkable.

Van Gisbergen posted the snap of his X-ray to social media, sharing the shocking news.

“Interesting visit to the surgeon,” he said.

“Didn’t do any more damage to the collarbone but found three broken ribs from the shunt.”

The Kiwi star was battling to be fit in time for the Sandown series after a mountain biking accident ended with surgery on March 6.

Van Gisbergen had a plate inserted to his shoulder, held together by nine screws but decided to race for Red Bull last weekend.

Remarkably, van Gisbergen pulled off a famous win in the first race of the event.

After qualifying 17th, van Gisbergen worked his way through the field to claim victory after passing Ford’s Cameron Waters with just a lap to go.

And that golden run continued as he claimed pole for both Sunday races, and never surrendered.

Van Gisbergen became the first driver since Mark Skaife in 1994 to win the opening five races of a Supercars season.
