Adopted WA hero Overpass has been made a surprise acceptor for Saturday night’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1207m) at England’s Royal Ascot, his second start this week.
The two-time Quokka and Winterbottom Stakes winner ran a brave one-length third behind Mission Central in Tuesday’s Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1005m), prompting his trainer Bjorn Baker to double dip at the royal meeting.
“We’ll be back. Unfinished business,” Baker declared moments after Tuesday’s run.
Support has rained in for the son of Vancouver since final field confirmation from $16 down to $8.50.
However, it’s another Aussie who’s expected to take all the beating in this weekend’s contest.
Joliestar has firmed from $3 down to clear $2.60 favouritism for the showpiece event and victory would pronounce a bold bid for the mare to become Australian Horse of the Year.’
Prior to her departure, the Chris Waller-trained bay recorded wins in both the Canterbury and T J Smith Stakes at Group 1 level.
“I couldn’t be happier with her,” Waller said.
“It was a big trip and she did lose a little bit of weight on the flight, but she’s put it back on and I was really pleased with how she looks.
“Her preparation you could say has been faultless. She looks fantastic.
“Her work over the past week has been perfect and she’s bouncing. Ready to go.”
If victorious, Joliestar will become the third Australian horse to claim the feature after Choisir in 2003 and Black Caviar in 2012.
Waller has already tasted success in Britain having won the 2022 King Charles III with Nature Strip.
It would also add to Waller and jockey James McDonald’s record tallies for Group 1 successes in a season, making it 23 majors.
Fellow Australian native Zac Lloyd experienced a landmark moment at midnight Friday WA time when he saluted at Ascot with Moonfall.
“It is very special,” Lloyd said.
“Everyone kept telling me if you think you are going well, wait another five seconds and that is all I was thinking about.
“By doing that, he was able to be strong the last 100m and he was holding his competitors quite comfortably.”
+ Hot And High remains a warm $2.45 favourite for the Listed $125,000 Belmont Guineas (1600m) as the impressive filly bids to turn the tables on Vatican Storm ($7) after their Raconteur Stakes meeting two weeks ago.
The former entered that race unbeaten from five starts but was nosed out despite recapturing the lead soon after the post.
This time, Hot And High gets a 2kg weight swing in her favour and is better drawn than Vatican Storm, having barrier 6 to his 15.
Like Clockwork ($5.50) brings an alternate form line and splits the two in betting, while Ladies Pro ($8.50) is the remaining starter at single-digit odds.
