At an age when most pacers are retired, 12-year-old Dredlock Rockstar is on target for the $50,000 Bunbury Cup after bolting to victory in Friday night’s Slater Gartrell Pace at Gloucester Park.

The Ashleigh Markham-trained evergreen raced prominently for reinsman Michael Grantham and scored by 6m from Patrickthepiranha without being fully extended.

Markham said Dredlock Rockstar, a winner of 22 races, was thriving at his Capel stable yesterday.

“He’s got a good appetite and is bright,” Markham said. “We’ll be looking at a start in Friday week’s Bunbury Cup if all keeps going well.

“Enthusiasm is his key to success and he jumps around like a two-year-old. He loves working up a hill on our sand track and is always keen.

“When he turned 12, I recommended to his owners that we’d put up the white flag as soon as he showed signs of not being interested in racing.

“But with his current attitude, it seems sure he has more success in store.”

Dredlock Rockstar has recorded two Gloucester Park wins, two seconds, a third and a fourth in his past six starts.

Trainer Matt Scott is also confidently eyeing the future with Rock Me Over and Brookies Jet, who scored a double on Friday night.

It was Rock Me Over’s eighth Gloucester Park win since Scott bought him for $6000 in 2019.

“He earned us more than $160,000 in stakes,” Scott said. “Rock Me Over and Brookies Jet should continue to be successful in Friday night class.

“Brookies Jet has come back better than ever after his spell to recover from a suspensory ligament injury last year.”

Meanwhile, Racing and Wagering WA harness racing manager Kerry Hanks said recently abandoned meetings would be replaced.

“The Northam Cup will be run on March 13,” Hanks said yesterday. “A meeting lost at Albany has been transferred to March 12 and a Bridgetown fixture will be on May 2.”

Gloucester Park’s program this Friday night will be highlighted by the $100,000 2YO colts and geldings Sales Classic and $100,000 2YO fillies Sales Classic.

Colts and geldings’ heat winners last Tuesday nights were Whataretheodds (1:57.5), Rock On Top (1:58) and Dunamis (1:58.1). Fillies’ heats were won by Jay Elle (1:57), Extraordinary Mary (1:58.3) and Valhalla Miss (1:59.9).
