Unheralded mare Cryptic Love caused a boilover when she defied her $31 quote to win yesterday’s Listed Pinjarra Classic (1300m).

Aided by a hot speed and rails-hugging ride by Jason Whiting, the David Harrison-trained sprinter stormed home from sixth on the turn to beat Western Temple ($31) by a half-head.

Son Of A God ($4.20) was third, beaten narrowly in the tight three-way photo.

Harrison had strong claims with the $3.40 favourite Gemma’s Son, but it was Cryptic Love who added a valuable black-type win to her record.

He said Gemma’s Son went too hard in front before fading to run seventh.

Cryptic Love, who ran third to Platoon in the Cyril Flower Stakes (1200m) at her previous start, scored her eighth win from 37 starts.

“She’s been running good races and she earned her right to be in the race,” Harrison said.

“With the hectic pace, Jason rode her brilliantly and she’s got up on the inside so it’s great.

“I’ve always loved the horse. She only cost me $30,000 and she’s won over half a million now, so she’s been good to us.”

Whiting equalled Paul Harvey’s record of three Pinjarra Classic winners. He also won on First Among Equals (2016) and Harvard (2009).

“There had been nothing wrong with her last couple of runs, especially last start was a good effort,” Whiting said.

“She was off the bit early but she kept giving.”

PARNHAM’S PLAN

There are positive signs trainer Neville Parnham’s duo Platoon and Indian Pacific will fly to Melbourne and race at Flemington on Saturday.

“I just have to finalise plans,” Parnham said.

“Getting an accredited person to fly with them was the issue, but someone approached me.

“They wouldn’t go until Tuesday or Wednesday night and I’ll work them first to make sure they’re tickety boo.”

If they fly over, Platoon will tackle the Group 3 Shaftesbury Handicap (1400m) and Indian Pacific will start in the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m).

“I’ll also run Neufbosc in the Blamey Stakes,” Parnham said.

“Platoon could then back up in the March Stakes.”

Team ‘Showusdmoney’ won a $10,000 share in a yearling after they were announced the winners of the Own The Dream competition yesterday.

The Own The Dream series gives newcomers to the racing industry an insight into the sport with behind-the-scenes tours and events over six weeks.

“My wife, two sisters, one of my sister’s boyfriends and a mate from work who has no idea about racing are in the team,” Russell Collier said.

“I was in a syndicate that finished second last year but this is a total shock.”
