Australian jockey Zac Lloyd has enjoyed a landmark Royal Ascot winner in front of the King and Queen, earning victory for English trainer George Boughey at the showpiece race meeting with a superb ride on Moonfall to take the Britannia Stakes.
On a day when Ireland's master trainer Aidan O'Brien took most of the plaudits by saddling his 100th winner at the Royal meeting in the Ascot Gold Cup, 22-year-old Lloyd held his nerve in the mile-long race to earn his maiden win in the biggest week-long event on the British racing calendar.
The Sydney-based Lloyd has flown thousands of miles to enjoy a summer spell in the UK, mainly riding for Boughey, and he was responsible for steering home the Newmarket trainer's second winner of the week in the colours of the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid.
"This is unreal. To ride a winner here is very special. He was probably my only bullet for the week," beamed Lloyd, who's following in the winning tracks of his dad Jeff, the jockey who rode over 5500 races around the world, particularly in South Africa and Australia, and was nicknamed "The Guv".
"Zac gave him a beautiful ride, very cool," a delighted Boughey said.
"He has come over to ride for us primarily. I called him in the winter and it's nice when it comes off. He's a very light young man and he obviously rides very well. Thrilled.
"He's a beautiful rider, he's been in a lot riding out for us. I was really keen to get him over. Zac's taken it by storm down in Australia and it's great to provide him with his first Royal Ascot winner."
Story of the day, though, was star stayer Scandinavia's Gold Cup victory under another fine ride from Ryan Moore, denying last year's winner Trawlerman in the dying stages to give the incredible O'Brien a century of Royal Ascot wins.
O'Brien, who received his prize from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, said it was "just incredible" to reach the century milestone, which has included 10 victories in the Gold Cup itself.
Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori hailed the achievement, saying: "One hundred Royal Ascot winners, amazing, what an achievement for Aidan.
"Huge congratulations to him and he has Ryan (Moore) there as well – he's riding out of his skin."
