Budding Great Southern tennis stars flocked to Emu Point Tennis Club in their droves on Friday for the annual Albany Junior Open tennis tournament. More than 50 young players filled 35 energetic teams in the annual tournament, showcasing their skills and vying for the title of doubles champions in their respective age divisions. The competition served as a curtain raiser to the Albany Senior Open Tennis Tournament held on the weekend, making its second appearance on the event calendar. Players aged 12 and above competed in the finals, while the younger divisions took part in a round-robin style fixture. Fernando Gatti and Dylan Stone took out the 14&U boys title after they narrowly edged out Lewis Ridge and Austin Slade to win 6-5. Olivia Riggall and Eva Kowald flexed their muscles in the 14&U girls category beating Jessica Gatti and Paige Micaheel 6-0. Hannah Bignell and Brooke Milne beat Maggie O’Meehan and Anneliese Slade won the 12&U girls title 6-2. In the mixed doubles, Kelsie Smith and Zuri Ochieng took out the 10&U round-robin tournament, while Billy Pieper and Oscar Lehmann secured the 8&U (novice). Sarah Bignell (novice) and Zuri Ochieng were awarded sportsmanship awards after showing exemplary team spirit and fair play to all athletes who hit the court on Friday. Daniel Kreuger was awarded an individual award for his persistence, endeavour and willingness to co-operate with the other competitors throughout the tournament.
