WA golfers Connor McKinney and Hayden Hopewell have advanced to the match play rounds at the US Amateur Championships in New Jersey while US-based sandgroper Karl Vilips awaits a play-off to seal his spot.

Joondalup’s McKinney shot one of the lowest rounds of the day at Arcola Country Club on Tuesday to finish 14th at the completion of the stroke play phase.

The current Australian amateur champion will face American Travis Vick, the low amateur at this year’s US Open, at Ridgewood Country Club on Wednesday (Thursday morning WA time).

Royal Fremantle’s Hopewell experienced a rollercoaster second round at Ridgewood to finish 30th and book a first-round meeting with Argentina’s Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira.

Vilips, who plays college golf in the US for Stanford University, will compete with 15 other players for the final 11 match play spots early Wednesday morning.
