The European Tour has long outstripped it's origins and to underline that it will host an event in Japan for the first time.

The golf-mad Asian nation will become the 51st different country to host an event on the tour when a $US2 m ($A2.8 m) tournament is played at Ishioka Golf Club in Omitama from April 21-24.

It will be the first regular event to be co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour.

The European Tour, which concluded with Collin Morikawa winning the Race to Dubai on Sunday, starts the new season in Johannesburg on Thursday.

European Tour group chief executive Keith Pelley said: the tour was "a global tour and, as a result, we relish opportunities such as this to break new ground, in the process creating exciting golf tournaments for our fans worldwide and wonderful opportunities for our players and stakeholders alike."
