Despite an impressive win at the Spalding Park Open in Geraldton yesterday, top WA amateur Haydn Barron is in no rush to make the move to the professional ranks.

Barron opened with a spectacular six-under 66 at Spalding Park Golf Club on Saturday to open up a three-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard and claimed victory with a composed three-under 69 yesterday.

The 25-year-old beat Victorian pro Andrew Kelly by a stroke in the 36-hole event and was thrilled to have finally won his first PGA of Australasia event in a field headlined by Brett Rumford, Rick Kulacz and Brady Watt.

“I’ve gone close a few times before so it’s great to finally score a win against guys like Daniel Fox and Brett Rumford,” Barron said.

“I flushed it all weekend and was able to take advantage on the par fives.

“I had six birdie putts inside three feet on Saturday and then made a few longer ones on the back nine on Sunday.”

Coached by Craig Bishop, Barron was planning to turn professional a couple of years ago but events transpired to keep his amateur status intact.

“I was planning on turning professional two years ago, right after I had represented Australia on a couple of national teams,” Barron said.

“We were meant to play in Hong Kong but it got cancelled because of the riots and then COVID struck not long after that.”

Barron is committed to turning pro at some stage but will wait until he has guaranteed playing opportunities before taking the plunge.

“I’ll keep playing as an amateur and try to get status on a tour somewhere before I turn pro,” Barron said.

“I was hoping to head to the European Tour Q-school later this year but it has been cancelled.

“I’ll play the Australasian Tour school early next year, or maybe try to qualify for the Japan Tour.”

Barron, a member of WA Golf Club in Yokine, finished runner-up to fellow gun amateur Hayden Hopewell at last year’s WA Open.
