Fremantle star Murphy Reid has added another accolade to the brilliant start of his career, being named the unanimous best player on the ground by coaches Justin Longmuir and Dean Cox on Thursday night.
Reid was stunning during the Dockers’ 38-point win over Sydney at Optus Stadium. He had 28 disposals and a game-high 12 score involvements while repeatedly cutting the Swans apart.
The teenager helped the Dockers to overcome a first half where they failed to kick a goal to dominate the remainder of the game and send the second placed Sydney home in shock.
Reid is an All-Australian contender this season and has had a series of big games, but he’s never polled 10 votes in the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year award previously.
There was plenty of debate leading into the match about whether the Swans would send their best tagger, James Jordon, to lock down on Reid. Sydney chose to tag Andrew Brayshaw instead.
Cox said they’d now have to assess that decision and make a call on what to do the next time they play against the Dockers.
“One thing you look at is he plays forward mid a lot. So it’s the ability between him and Bolton to to do that. They got off the chain doing that, so we need to be better in that space,” Cox said.
“We just thought what Brayshaw does and gives them in a transition sense was one thing we could look at. We’ll probably reflect on it. Would we change it? If you take him off someone else and then someone else has a bit of an impact. We’ll have a look and make recommendations next time we play.”
All eyes will be on Reid against Port Adelaide on Saturday to see how the Power attempt to quell his influence.

Reid kicked four goals and received seven Coaches Association votes when the teams played in Perth last season and then followed up with two goals in a third quarter blast when the Dockers fought back to win by six points at Adelaide Oval later in the year.
