Australian Diamonds goal shooter Sophie Garbin has defended her netball team’s uniform after it sparked controversy at the Commonwealth Games for being “too short”.

The national women’s netball team has been dominating at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and despite their winning streak, much of the conversation has been around the length of the dresses.

During recent matches, many fans noticed the dresses riding up and exposing their green shorts underneath, with players constantly pulling down and adjusting the green and gold uniform.

“Were the dresses meant to be singlets?” one person said in an Instagram post.

Another viewer said: “I struggle to understand how the dresses were so poorly designed and fitted.”

“Sort the dresses out... professional athletes shouldn’t have to spend half the game covering their bums,” a third added.

Other viewers pointed out that the dresses riding up were “distracting to watch” and “would be annoying for them to play in” after looking “very uncomfortable”.

However, Kalgoorlie-born Garbin, who also plays for the Melbourne Vixens, defended the short dresses, saying the team loves them and doesn’t think it’s impacting their performance.

“I feel like as a netballer, I’m always tugging my dress down,” she told Code Sports.

“Obviously, we’ve noticed lots of the comments from other people.

“But I feel like on the court, we’re used to dresses coming up and down, and I don’t think it’s affecting our performance, so it’s okay.

“We might have a look at what we can do in the next couple of days, but we love our dress.

“We love what Valour have done with the pattern and the fabric and everything, so we’re really proud to wear it.”

The star shooter took her stance further by sharing an Instagram video on Monday with the caption: “How we feel about wearing the most talked about thing at Comm Games.”

“We love it,” she added with a series of emojis — including a peach.

The video began with her mouthing a famous line from Kim Kardashian — “Because it’s iconic. And I love to do iconic sh.t” — before dancing in the Diamonds dress.

Garbin’s friends and followers backed her team in and filled the comments section with messages of support.

Bec Judd said: “The 🍑 needs its own account.”

The official Comm Games Australia account wrote: “You tell ‘em”.

“Omg you girls are rocking the dress and the court,” one fan said.

“Well played 😂👏🔥 I’d just take the dress off and go in the crop and bike shorts if I looked like you all,” another added.

According to Code Sports, the Diamonds are considering making alterations to their dresses to stop players from having to pull their kits down.

The Diamonds have had a cracking start to the competition, dominating Tonga (99-38) in their opening match and England (66-47).

They will next take on Malawi on Tuesday.
