Bush and ‘Burbs: The fairytale story of every country football league across Western Australia this season

In a special edition of Bush and ‘Burbs, we have taken a look at the fairytale story in every country league across Western Australia and who you should get behind to win premierships this season. Great Northern Railways Finished on the wrong side of the highly-controversial and heartbreaking finish to last year’s grand final against Northampton and it would be great to see them turn things around. Central Wheatbelt Bencubbin Captain-coached by former Fremantle player Brandon Matera, whose brother Bailey has also headed down with another couple of members of the famous footy family. Onshore Cup Augusta Abalones This isn’t a town normally associated with footy, but this is a super passionate club with one of the best names going around. They’re right in the mix to go deep in finals this season. Central Coastal Midlands Cervantes Powerhouse country football club, but with a knack of developing and keeping local talent. Won a homecoming premiership for West Coast great Mark LeCras a couple of years ago, but are playing from behind a bit this year. Would be a wild ride from here, but they’re every chance. West Kimberley Towns Towns have turned around their poor fortunes across the past decade and won last year’s minor premiership last year, only to be toppled in the grand final by a stacked Cable Beach side. They’re leading the way again Avon Football Association Quairading The Bulls haven’t won a premiership since 2008 and narrowly lost last year’s grand final to Cunderdin. Now sit top-of-the-ladder after 10 games, led by former St Kilda player Tom Lee and ex-WAFL great Freddie Clutterbuck. Ravensthorpe & Districts Football League Hopetoun This is Australia’s smallest football league. There are just two teams — Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun — who play each other week after week, with the occasional player swap and the odd game played on a soccer pitch due to lack of playing numbers. Ravensthorpe have been the dominant club across the last few years, so we’re backing the Sharks to double down on last year’s flag after breaking their duck. East Kimberley Football League Warmun Eagles Have come close so many times before and are in the mix again this season, behind the two powerhouse clubs Waringarri and Ord River. Eastern Districts Football League Kulin/Kondinin Blues Won the minor premiership but lost the grand final in 2022, then plummeted down the ladder last season. They are spearheaded by former West Coast player and West Perth great Simon Duckworth, who is still in the league’s top-five goalkickers. Gascoyne Football Association Ramblers It’s a three-team league and Warriors still haven’t won a game this season, so we’re getting behind Carnarvon-based Ramblers to storm home and beat Exmouth to win the flag. Esperance District Football Association Ports After enduring a massive losing streak two seasons ago and winning just two games last year, Ports are finally in the mix again. They sit third with three wins from seven games, level with Esperance. Hills Football Association Swan View The club has jumped between leagues in the past two decades, but hasn’t won in the Hills since 1998. They sit second this year, with the massive percentage of 335.92, behind only dominant reigning premiers Pickering-Brook. South West Football League Donnybrook Led by former Essendon and Peel Thunder great Ben Howlett, captaining his boyhood side, the Dons are in the mix with a whole series of the league’s traditional powerhouses to play finals and chase their first flag since 2018. Mortlock Football League Calingiri In a remarkably equal league, Calingiri own one of the longest streaks without a premiership, flagless since 2015. They sit fourth this season after spending last year towards the bottom. North Midlands Football League Three Springs The best story here would be Three Springs, who have not saluted since 2005 and lost last season’s grand final. They are equal-top after 10 games with reigning premiers Carnamah-Perenjori. Ongerup Football Association Lake Grace-Pingrup The home of Nat Fyfe and Liam Baker and unlucky loser of the past two grand finals. Is this the year Lake Grace/Pingrup breakthrough for their first flag in 12 years? The Bombers sit second to Gnowangerup with a few weeks to go. Peel Football Netball League Halls Head The Lightning joined the league in 2008 and are yet to taste success at senior level. This feels like their season though, sitting a game clear at the top of the ladder in June, trailed by reigning premiers Centrals. Fortescue National Football League Tom Price Panthers In a small competition, it’s been a relatively long time between drinks for the Panthers as cross-town rivals Tigers and Paraburdoo have shared premierships in recent years. But it appears there will be a changing of the guard this season, with Panthers sitting second behind Towns this season and right in the mix. Goldfields Football League Mines Rovers Outside of the struggling Kambalda, every other team in the league has won a premiership since Diorites’ last in 2018. The famous club, which has produced a string of AFL players, is well positioned for a push this year and their first grand final since that flag. Great Southern Football League Mount Barker Albany was the ultimate fairytale last season, coming from the brink of extinction to winning a maiden premiership. Now it’s Mount Barker who look set to play finals, sitting fourth as it stands, and are out to break a flag drought that dates back to 1996. Lower South West Football League Deanmill The Manjimup-based club has lost its past four grand finals, but looks set to return to the finals again this season after a host of local boys returned to the Hawks from the South West. Newman National Football League Centrals Two-time reigning premiers Pioneers are undefeated again and turning this competition into a bit of a boat race, but Centrals are best-placed to upset them. Centrals lost grand finals to Saints in 2021 and 2019 either side of a COVID-cancelled season, but haven’t won one for 12 years. They sit second as it stands. North Pilbara Football League Karratha Kats Have lost the last two grand finals to Dampier, including 2022 by a point, and have not tasted success since 2018. They sit second, but a little way of the Sharks’ pace. Upper Great Southern Wagin They have a bit of work to do, but Wagin are pushing to win their first premiership since 2004. It’s not the league’s longest — that belongs to Brookton-Pingelly — but the Bulldogs are a big chance to play finals this season and compete for a flag, which was a regular occurrence as a powerhouse club of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
