Fremantle Dockers veteran David Mundy won’t give up hope of winning premiership before AFL retirement
Fremantle veteran David Mundy hasn’t given up hope of winning a premiership before drawing the curtain on his illustrious career.
In his 18th season, the 35-year-old is in career-best form, ranked the league’s ninth-best player while leading the AFL Coaches Association votes after six rounds.
Mundy is ranked fifth in the competition for score involvements this year with 49, but he says he’s not here to settle for racking up possessions.
“(A premiership) is always the goal. I’m certainly not hanging around just to play football and go out and get a kick on the weekend,” Mundy told AFL 360 tonight.

“The ultimate goal is always to strive for that ultimate success.
“We’ve seen numerous examples over the past five to six years that it can turn really quickly.
“You can either shoot up the ladder or slide down it really, really quickly.
“Our week-to-week focus here is to execute our game plan as best as we can so we can try and drive our group chemistry as quickly as we can.”
Sunday’s western derby will be Mundy’s 339th AFL game and the 29th cross-town clash he’s played.
As Fremantle’s oldest player, he’s seen a lot of groups come and go, but he rates the current squad as the pinnacle.
“Certainly at the moment with this group it’s one of the best groups I’ve been a part of,” Mundy said.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to come in to training and to represent Fremantle with them each week.”
Mundy quipped there’s no secret to his durability - except perhaps a little too much hunger to compete.
“A little bit of luck goes into it, I’ve avoided major injuries throughout my career - mostly,” he said.
“An unhealthy dose of competitiveness.. I lost a goal-kicking contest with Josh Treacy yesterday and I’m still filthy about it.
“I still really enjoy the environment, going out each week and competing against the best.”
