Fremantle superstar Josh Treacy was the victim of some friendly fire late in his side’s enthralling clash with Western Bulldogs, copping an errant high-five from teammate Andrew Brayshaw.
Brayshaw was hugely fired up after kicking Fremantle’s fourth consecutive goal at the start of the final term to extend their lead out to 28 points.
But he may have attacked his celebration with too much enthusiasm, with his effort bursting through Treacy’s hands and forcing the key forward to wear the impact around his eye.
Treacy had to come from the field under the blood rule due to the impact of Brayshaw’s unintended strike, which left him with a small cut just above his eyebrow.
After the game, Brayshaw said he was not happy to see Treacy’s eye with some swelling after the game.
“We need to work on that, the high-five,” Brayshaw told Fox Footy.
“We’ll do a bit of work on that during the week to make sure we get good contact.”
Channel 7 expert Nick Riewoldt was able to see the funny side of the incident.
“Footy’s hard enough, you don’t need that from your own teammate,” Riewoldt said.
Remarkably, the incident was not the first time Treacy had been unintentionally injured in a celebration, having been poked in the eye by Pat Voss in last year’s first western derby in round three.
After the game, his teammate Luke Jackson joked: “He’s got bad luck with the celebrations”.
Both Brayshaw and Treacy were hugely influential in Fremantle’s late comeback against the Bulldogs, with Treacy slotting three goals in the second half and Brayshaw slowing down Marcus Bontempelli after the superstar made a blistering start to the contest.
