Fremantle Dockers debutant Chris Scerri has risen from overlooked suburban footballer to AFL debutant

Try getting your head around this - Chris Scerri has gone from playing suburban footy to the AFL in just 182 days. That’s right. On September 20 last season, Scerri played in the Essendon District Football League grand final for Strathmore. He didn’t just play either. He dominated. The 19-year-old had 26 possessions and 13 clearances to win the Reg Rose Medal for best on ground. If only people knew that the next time they saw Scerri, it would be in a Fremantle Dockers uniform on March 21 at Optus Stadium. His premiership coach Nick Ash still shakes his head in amazement. Scerri wasn’t an elite junior footballer. Overlooked for Victoria’s elite under 18 competition during 2024, the small forward was no chance of getting drafted. But everyone knew he had determination.. Scerri focused on becoming a VFL player and enjoyed a fantastic 2025 season with Northern Bullants, where he was named the club’s Best First Year player. But he loved going back to Strathmore and happily played three reserves matches during VFL byes just to qualify for finals. Then, when he stepped onto the September stage, Scerri ran wild. “It was amazing,” Ash told The West Australian. “It was his whole finals series, not just the grand final. He just lit it up. We didn’t have him at Strathmore for most of last year. For someone so young to slot straight into the side was a sight to see. He was a much deserving recipient of the best on ground medal. “It’s senior footy at a Premier level. So to go out there as a 19-year-old, I don’t think many would be able to do what he did. He dominated. We injected him into the midfield in the second half where his explosive pace and ability to break the lines when other blokes were tiring meant he could set the game alight.” The EDFL is a strong suburban competition. That’s where Luke Ryan played before moving to the VFL to chase his dream. Strathmore had former AFL players and ex-VFL players in that premiership team. They were hardened men who lost the preliminary final the previous year. Scerri soared above them all. “His skill level has always been high, but it’s more his decision making that stands out,” Ash said. “When you add skill to his decision making, it tops it off. His one wood is his ability to break tackles, break away and then have the time and space to hit targets. “ Scerri’s talent has been clear from the moment he joined Fremantle for pre-season training with the hope of gaining the final spot on their list. He looked composed whenever he won the ball and could hit targets under pressure. He looked perfectly at home. To go from someone who wasn’t drafted to debuting in round two is even more impressive when you consider how many forwards the Dockers drafted last year. They took Adam Sweid at pick 25, Tobyn Murray at number 40, then snapped up Leon Kickett as their first selection in the rookie draft. Scerri has jumped over them all. Ash hopes Scerri becomes an inspiration for overlooked teenagers. “It shows that if you work hard at something, are determined to do it and put time and effort in, then anything is achievable. Chris is a prime example of that.,” he said. “His last game was for Strathmore in a grand final and his next game for points is playing for Fremantle in the AFL. It’s amazing.”
