Shai Bolton's spectacular hanger against Geelong has missed out on the round eight AFL mark of the year nomination, after fans instead voted for a grab from Collingwood's Brody Mihocek.

Bolton's brilliant first-quarter mark over teammate Tom Lynch and Geelong's Mark Blicavs in the goal square on Friday night was arguably one of the best marks of recent years.

The Richmond gun was nominated for round eight, along with Mihocek and North Melbourne's Cameron Zurhaar.

The weekly mark of the round nomination is fan-voted and Collingwood had urged their fans on social media to vote for Mihocek's grab over North Melbourne's Ben Cunnington.

"We imagine it'll be pretty hard for Checkers to beat Shai Bolton... Give it your all, Magpie Army," the Magpies tweeted on Monday.

The move proved a success, with the Magpies' forward prevailing with just over half the fan vote.

"Shoutout to the Magpie Army, you've done it," Collingwood tweeted.

The surprise voting result caused a storm of discussion on social media.

"With all due respect to Brody, this wasn't mark of the week. I reckon he would even agree with that," Richmond great Matthew Richardson tweeted.

However, Bolton can still win the mark of the year award.

Five marks outside the 23 fan-voted weekly winners are included in the final pool of 23.

From there, the AFL's game analysis committee selects a final three marks based on a 5-4-3-2-1 vote.

The overall winner from the three votes is then selected by the same committee (counted as 10 votes) and by public voting (counted as one vote).
