Who stood tallest for WA against Victoria in AFL Origin’s red-hot return against Optus Stadium? Danielle Laidley assesses each player here. 1. Jesse Hogan: 10 Became the main key forward target as the match progressed and showed strong forward craft, booting five goals and looked as if he was going to be the match-winner. 2. Chad Warner: 9 Started on fire, kicking the first goal. He only had 16 possessions, but was super damaging with eight inside 50s, seven score involvements, over 600 metres gained and a goal assist. 3. Jordan Clark: 9 A typical game from the Fremantle running back. Worked hard both sides of the ball and defended well with nine intercept possessions. Really penetrated the game, giving WA great drive with four inside 50s from his 27 disposals. That included 586 metres gained and five score involvements. 4. Tom Barrass: 9 Stood tall in defence all game. He intercepted nine times and made some big spoils. Repelled many Victorian attacks and kept WA in the contest. 5. Brad Hill: 9 A classy wing performance, particularly in the first half. Ran long and hard, gaining 26 disposals, a goal and a goal assist, along with seven score involvements. Used the ball very well. 6. Charlie Cameron: 8 The dangerous small forward bobbed up with three goals, eight score involvements and a goal assist from his classy 15 possessions. 7. Darcy Cameron: 8 Very good against Max Gawn, taking the ruck honours. Had 15 disposals and 17 hit outs, but his team-high nine score involvements were critical across the game. 8. Shai Bolton: 8 The good was his three centre clearances, five inside 50s, a goal and eight score involvements from his 24 touches. But there is a pattern with his finishing in front of goal and he kicked three behinds for the game, which could have made it a lot closer. 9. Patrick Cripps: 8 The captain led from the front, putting on a masterclass at centre bounce, winning eight clearances. He also won a game-high 14 contested possessions, finished with 20 touches and five score involvements. Was a key person in making this concept come to life again. 10. Lawson Humphries: 8 Was solid defending Toby Greene, but his run and carry from defence was very good, accumulating 23 disposals and nearly 500 metres gained, going at 91.3 per cent efficiency. 11. Jake Waterman: 7 Came into the game after quarter time, with his usual high work-rate, accumulating eight marks and kicking two important goals to go with seven score involvements. 12. Trent Rivers: 7 Was more than solid in defence with four intercepts. He gathered 24 touches and had 500 metres gained from good ball use from defence. 13. Luke Jackson: 7 A sign of things to come, playing many minutes in the midfield. He only had 12 disposals for the game, but kicked 2.1 with six score involvements. 14. Liam Baker: 7 Was busy, racking up 23 disposals with six intercepts and seven score involvements, but his kicking let him down at times. 15. Jaeger O’Meara: 7 Was busy early on the wing and used the ball very well, going at 93.8 per cent efficiency. Finished with 16 touches, five score involvements and a goal assist. 16. Stephen Coniglio: 6 Gathered 21 touches and four clearances as an inside midfielder, but he didn’t penetrate the game, and only had one score involvement for the game. 17. Sam Taylor: 6 Kept Victoria’s potentially match-winning forwards quiet in the first half with a solid performance in defence, before leaving the game in the third quarter with hamstring awareness. 18. Wil Powell: 6 Played just 60 per cent game time and had 10 possessions, but he stood out with good ball use. 19. Kysaiah Pickett: 5 Flicked between forward and midfield across the game, but wasn’t able to light up. He finished with 15 touches and just three score involvements. 20. Tim English: 5 Did more than play his role as the second ruckman, playing just 57 per cent game time. His 10 touches and 11 hit outs were valuable. 21. Nathan Broad: 5 Was solid in defence, where he looked to match up on Patrick Dangerfield. Wasn’t able to penetrate the game from his 10 possessions. 22. Aaron Naughton: 4 Struggled to influence the game as a key forward, taking just two marks. He wasn’t able to hit the scoreboard from his eight disposals. 23. Callum Ah Chee: 4 We didn’t see the best of the Lion-turned-Crow. He played 59 per cent time-on-ground and left the game with what looked like hamstring soreness late. 24. Mitch Georgiades: 4 Just eight touches and four score involvements in a half of football before he was ruled out with hamstring awareness at half time. 25. Rory Lobb: 4 Beaten in contests with Ben King with great ball use from Victoria early. Gained composure as the game went on to have some solid moments in defence.
