WA’s Synergy finds no evidence of data hack impacting customer information after claim by X user

Synergy says there is no evidence to support claims of a data hack impacting almost a million customers and has finalised its investigations into a cryptic social media post made earlier in the week.
A post on X by a page self described as a Miami cybersecurity company claimed 900,002 subscriber records had been accessed in the hack.
They claimed a hacker had accessed full names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, account IDs, payment balances and billing statements.
But a spokesperson for the State-owned energy provider said on Friday investigations had found there was no evidence of data loss.
“Synergy has investigated a recent cyber security claim made by an external party,” they said.
“Synergy can confirm there is no evidence of a breach to our systems and networks. We have notified the Office of Digital Government and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
“Synergy constantly monitors its information systems, investigates all claims, and coordinates closely with state and federal cyber security agencies.
“Synergy will continue to prioritise the security of its customers’ data.”
Earlier, State Government Minister John Carey said he was aware the utility was investigating claims.
“I’ve just only received a very quick advice, all I can say is Synergy believes that there has not been a hacking incident that has had an impact,” he said.
“However, they are undertaking an investigation.”
