VideoA free fuel giveaway in Truganina, Melbourne, created traffic chaos as extremely long queues of drivers blocked a nearby intersection.

West Australians will not get their $100 fuel relief voucher in time for Christmas if they have not yet made a claim and plan to submit a paper form.

The voucher, one of State’s cost-of-living measures, has been taking about 10 weeks to arrive to those who send a paper form in the post.

It means those who submit a paper form now will be unlikely to receive the cash before Christmas.

“Applicants should generally allow approximately nine to 10 weeks from posting their application to receiving their payment, with postage potentially taking longer in some regional locations,” a spokesperson said.

About $110 million has been paid to more than a million of the 2.3 million eligible licence holders since the scheme started on July 1.

Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure workers reportedly process about 3000 paper applications a day, with 10 full-time staff and additional people brought in to help process applications.

Additional resourcing would be rolled out this week, the spokesperson said.

Most people, about 96 per cent of applications, were made using the Service WA app, with those applications taking one or two days to be approved, Treasurer Rita Saffioti told parliament last month.
