One Nation could end up obsolete in Parliament as crossbench influence shrinks

In the 46th Parliament, Pauline Hanson could end up obsolete. As the passing last week of the $158 billion tax cut package showed, the Government can now afford to put One Nation in the corner and still get legislation through the Senate. It would be naive to think there will be no government negotiations with Senator Hanson and her colleague, Queensland senator Malcolm Roberts, but the voting bloc of Centre Alliance senators Rex Patrick and Stirling Griff and independent Jacqui Lambie will create an interesting new dynamic, with less power resting with One Nation. If Labor and the Greens decide to vote against legislation, three is the magic number of crossbenchers the Coalition needs to pass a Bill, given that independent senator Cory Bernardi, who dramatically quit the Liberal Party in 2017, has said he will be voting with the Government. This means Centre Alliance and Lambie’s voting agreement could make or break legislation. While the trio have said they will not necessarily vote together on every Bill, they will be consulting beforehand and appear to be more politically aligned with each other than One Nation. In the previous Parliament, the Coalition had 29 senators after Bernardi quit the party and One Nation started with four senators. This meant the Government couldn’t pass anything that Labor, the Greens and One Nation all opposed. Now with Coalition ranks boosted to 35 senators and the crossbench shrunk from 11 to six with just two One Nation representatives, the Government has more options when it comes to getting legislation passed. Hanson clearly thrives on being given airtime and surely was less than impressed that last week all eyes were on Lambie rather than her. At one point during the tax cuts debate she even took to Sky to moan that Finance Minister and “crossbench whisperer” Mathias Cormann hadn’t called her. “I don’t think he’s got the guts to pick up the phone and actually talk to me,” she said. “And to turn around and say that he’s negotiating with crossbenchers is not the truth, because he’s not negotiating with me.” This was despite the Government organising Treasury briefings for One Nation. From a political perspective, being less reliant on One Nation to pass legislation is likely to be advantageous for the Government. While Hanson has her hardcore supporters, plenty of mainstream voters find her offensive and divisive. It also comes after a particularly embarrassing year for One Nation after secret recordings released by al-Jazeera’s undercover documentary revealed One Nation wanted millions of dollars in political donations from America’s National Rifle Association. Footage was also leaked of Hanson suggesting that the 1996 Port Arthur massacre could be a government conspiracy. The same cannot be said of Centre Alliance who brand themselves as “the sensible centre”. If the Government is seen to be doing deals with Centre Alliance it won’t give Labor the same ammunition to attack it the way it has in the past when it has accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of being in bed with One Nation. They also seem more consistent in their positions than Hanson, who once said on corporate tax cuts: “I haven’t flip-flopped. I said no originally, then I said yes, then I have said no and I have stuck to it.” Similarly, while Lambie still doesn’t mince her words — last week she quipped that politics changes “more than you change your undies” — her views have moderated in recent years and she seems committed to using her new status as a powerbroker to leverage wins for Tasmania. Hanson’s stunts have included turning up to Parliament in a burqa in 2017 and more recently bizarrely holding an interview in a graveyard, but Lambie is playing a more sophisticated media game where she is not giving an overload of interviews and is keeping her positions close to her chest. The Government is seeking to repeal the Medivac legislation in upcoming weeks and once again it will be likely to be all eyes on Lambie. Labor, the Greens and Centre Alliance have all indicated they will not support the repeal, whereas One Nation is expected to back it. Like she did with the tax cuts, Lambie could again wait till the last minute to reveal her hand. However, if the Tasmanian independent gets too much attention we should probably start bracing ourselves for One Nation’s next political stunt. Perhaps Hanson could release an updated version of her “I Have Been Murdered” video.
