Pauline Hanson will not ‘change her mind’ on Aboriginal constitutional recognition

Pauline Hanson will not “change her mind” on constitutional recognition after receiving a letter from Ken Wyatt at the weekend inviting One Nation and other parties to form a bipartisan working group to tackle the issue. The Minister for Indigenous Australians on Saturday wrote to senior MPs from across political parties, inviting them to join forces through the group which will aim to reach an agreement on indigenous constitutional recognition. The historic cross-parliamentary working group would work on the co-design process for the indigenous voice to Parliament and raise awareness about constitutional recognition among MPs. The Closing The Gap initiative will also be a major focus for group. However, while parliamentarians such as WA Greens senator Rachel Siewert confirmed they were open to the initiative and would be discussing it in the party room, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson pressed that she would not be moved on her opposition to constitutional recognition. “It won’t change her mind,” a spokesman for Senator Hanson said. “She’s given very solid reasons why she will never support the constitutional recognition, and constitutional lawyers have previously suggested her argument carries weight.” A spokesman for Mr Wyatt said the group had been created to build a “genuine non-partisan” approach to matters facing indigenous Australians. “The minister is anticipating that this group will engage in a productive way with the co-design of the voice and be integral to the advancement of constitutional recognition and truth-telling,” he said. “Ultimately, participation in the group is a matter for the various political parties, however, the minister remains committed to working across Parliament to deliver better outcomes for all indigenous Australians. “We are doing what we said we would do, which includes a genuine co-design process to develop models for an indigenous voice.” Senator Hanson has made her position clear in the past, urging people “not to fall for it”. The working group is hoping to have a maximum of 18 MPs, with invitation sent to seven government MPs, five Labor MPs, one Greens MP, one One Nation MP, one Centre Alliance MPs and two independents. It will be up to individual political parties to decide which MPs join the group that Mr Wyatt will also be part of. “It will be an opportunity for all political parties to engage in discussions and receive regular updates on important processes under way by the Morrison Government,” the terms of reference state. Labor MP and shadow minister for indigenous affairs Linda Burney said the party was in the process of considering the proposal but she harboured concerns the working group would be a “toothless tiger”. “What matters most of all right now is what First Nations communities think about the Prime Minister’s refusal to even consider an enshrined voice to the Parliament,” she said “Many people have told us they are disappointed, heartbroken and incredibly frustrated by the Government’s refusal to listen to the Uluru Statement.”
