One Nation, Jacqui Lambie vote with Labor, Greens to defeat Morrison Government’s union busting bill

One Nation and Jacqui Lambie have voted with the Labor and the Greens to block Christian Porter's union busting Bill in a major blow to the Government. The Government's Ensuring Integrity Bill failed to pass through the Senate this afternoon with the vote 34-34. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts both voted against the Bill which makes it easier for unions to be deregistered. Centre Alliance voted with the Government. Earlier in the day Government Senators had been confident in the Bill passing with Senator Hanson's support. Senator Hanson had been held meetings with ACTU Secretary Sally McManus and ACTU President Michele O'Neil throughout the week. She had also negotiated multiple amendments to the Bill with the Attorney General. The loss is a major blow to the Government who made the Bill their main focus in the final fortnight of parliament. Attorney General and WA MP Christian Porter said he was “very disappointed” with the result after thorough discussions with One Nation to get them on board. “It’s for Pauline Hanson to explain why she voted against a bill that met every requirement she sought through extensive consultation,” he said. “This is important reform which seeks to ensure that registered organisations obey the law. It is as simple as that.” Mr Porter said the Government remained committed to the reform and would reintroduce it in the future.
