Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt opens up on racism, recognition, bullying, and Pauline Hanson

Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt has stared down attacks on his office management, saying the main complainant involved in the accusations against him would not have won a case if she had taken it to the Fair Work Tribunal. In his most comprehensive interview in recent months, the member for Hasluck in Perth’s east declared he was “not going anywhere” if his electorate was axed during the upcoming redistribution and said he would likely take on a sitting Labor MP. On the voice and indigenous constitutional recognition, Mr Wyatt said he was still confident he would be able to secure consensus before the next election. But it was unlikely anything would be presented to the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Cabinet before the end of next year and even the start of the following year. And the Noongar man originally from Bunbury said he wanted to do more to help others deal with racism, detailing he has experienced racism even at the top of his career. Constitutional recognition Mr Wyatt said he would take lessons from the 1967 referendum on counting First Nations peoples in the census and would aim to bring as many organisations on board as possible to galvanise public support. This would include churches, unions and major corporations. Mr Wyatt said he would aim to present something to Mr Morrison by the end of next year at the earliest. “I’ve always said that I am not going to recommend to the PM a referendum if the question looks like it’s going to fail — we can’t afford failure it is too important and I would rather it be carried over to the next Parliament,” he said. “I’m still optimistic – sometimes when you turn your mind to the impossible and you bring people with it you can achieve it.” Pauline Hanson and advisory committee Mr Wyatt dismissed accusations he hadn’t got the balance right with the choice for his senior advisory group and cross-party working group. The latter includes Pauline Hanson and the former has a diverse range of high-profile Australians including conservative media commentator Chris Kenny. “Pauline Hanson was very engaging and made it very clear she had a very open mind so she doesn’t have a closed mind as people would assume,” Mr Wyatt said. “I didn’t pick people who would agree with me. Eventually good chairs and good leaders will come together with a common view on something that will work.” Pending retirement Mr Wyatt said he had lots of “unfinished business” in Parliament and would not be leaving anytime soon, even if his seat was axed as part of an upcoming Federal redistribution. Office bullying Mr Wyatt hit back at accusations he did not take seriously complaints of bullying in his office and oversaw one of the most toxic parliamentary offices. His former chief of staff Kate Johnson this week went public with her grievances after the report of an investigation into alleged bullying within Mr Wyatt’s office was again kept secret. “The elements of what she has raised had it gone through a Fair Work process the outcome would not have gone in the favour she had hoped,” Mr Wyatt said. “You have to consider the environment in which this place operates. There are pressure points but there are times when words are exchanged between staff—even between colleagues — we see it in question time when we argue across the chamber but you don’t hold a position that you were just bullied from someone across the chamber, you take it in the context of the pressure points.” Racism Mr Wyatt revealed he was subject to racism on a regular basis. “People send me emails saying they have nothing but contempt for me,” he said. “I am not going to challenge them, if you worry about every comment then you allow it to become a continuous scar that impedes you. “
