As Barnaby Joyce comes out defending his mid-interview outburst at his dog, Stella, the internet has done what it does best and turned the viral moment into a treasure trove of memes.
The One Nation MP appeared on ABC’s 7.30 earlier this week to respond to questions about Senator Pauline Hanson’s recent interview with controversial right-wing figure Tommy Robinson, as well as scrutiny over her podcast appearance, comments referencing the White Australia policy and the funding of her trip to a fashion show in Sicily.
As host Sarah Ferguson questioned the former deputy prime minister, the discussion was abruptly derailed when Mr Joyce turned his head and suddenly yelled “Sit down” in a stern tone.
“Sorry, it’s the dog”, he said.
After much backlash from viewers, the former deputy prime minister said his staffy-border collie cross, Stella, was a “young” farm dog that had wandered under the deck during the interview.
“It just came under the deck while Sarah Ferguson was giving me a grilling,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I tried (to go on) for a while, hoping it would stop. I was missing Sarah’s questions. The dog loved me in the morning. I don’t know if the same can be said about Sarah.”
Mr Joyce rejected suggestions his behaviour bordered on animal abuse, arguing the reaction highlighted what he described as a divide between regional and city living Australians.
“People in the regions laugh about it. People in the inner city think it’s a war crime,” he said.
Despite his apology, the internet has done what it does best and created a treasure trove of memes about the interaction.
