Fugitives spotted running across rooftops in Alexandria after wild police chase through Sydney’s inner west

A quiet laneway close to the Sydney CBD has been thrown into chaos after a woman was arrested in the aftermath of a wild police chase through the city’s inner west. Lawrence St residents in Alexandria were given a rude awakening on Friday morning when a police chase, which had begun several kilometres away in Newtown, ended in a laneway nearby. Footage from a residential security camera shows the moment a white Audi pulls up inside the laneway and three occupants bail out of the vehicle. Several police cars pull up behind the vehicle, and a handful of officers give chase. Shortly after, an officer comes back down the laneway past the abandoned car with a young woman in custody. After the arrest, police remained in the area and searched homes and backyards in an attempt to locate the two men, who both remain on the run. Vision shows officers hopping fences and shining torches into backyards, searching cars and speaking to neighbours as they try to find the fugitives. Police had earlier attempted to stop the Audi on New Canterbury Rd, Petersham at 5.30am after it was seen leaving the scene of a break and enter a short time earlier at Spencer St, Sumer Hill. A spokesman said the car was reported stolen from Newtown earlier this month. A pair of uni students living on the street described the moment they realised one of the men had been running across their roof. “We hear a loud bang, bang, bang on our roof,” Arjun Benipal, 23, told NewsWire. NED-15077-Inner-west-police-operation Fellow resident Gabriel Kidston, 23, said the pair ran downstairs and stepped outside to see what was going on. “The cops were kind of shining their flashlights saying, ‘She’s up there, she’s up there, oh no, no, no, she’s up there, she’s up there’.” Residents Arjun Benipal and Gabriel Kinston said they heard banging noises on the roof and saw cops shining flashlights towards the rooftops. He said they saw police bring out a woman in handcuffs about 10 minutes later. “We heard talk of a male but we never saw him,” Mr Kingston said. Officers briefly searched their garage and then left. Another woman told NewsWire she had been asleep in her room on the second floor of her house when she was woken up by “loud bangs”. “I woke up and looked out my bedroom window and saw a man running across the roof,” the woman said. “He looked like he was quite fit, jumping really crazy.” More to come
